Writing: Lucy Caulkins- Teachers' College Writing Project and Writer's Workshop Units (D. Jump & D. Wills)
Writing has become a very large focus in Kindergarten. Not only do we concentrate on penmanship and proper pencil grip, but also sentence creation. We start out slowly, but by the end of the year, we hope to have the students writing multiple sentences daily. Our writing lessons come from the 3 sources listed above, depending on the students' needs. Our goal is to encourage students to use phonetic spelling and sight words they have learned in class to write in complete sentences, including proper capitalization, spacing, punctuation, and letter formation. With the exception of our sight words, we do not want students to be overly worried about spelling things correctly at this point in their development. Below are some resources that may help your child with their penmanship and writing skills. Our lessons are based on the Common Core State Standards for California for Kindergarten.
